Gradac

The most southern turist place on Makarska riviera, settled on the half way between Split and Dubrovnik. The most interesting thing, from 16km in total, 10 km are pebbled beaches. That kind of ratio of pebbled beaches in regard to the lenght of the coast in total is really rare in the aquatorium of eastern Adriatic.

Except for the beauty of nature and landscape, the sea has exceptional clarity, high range of specific azure hue and high transparency. Hights of Biokovo nearby - mountain range that represents worlds phenomena in number and lenght of caves, pits and other specifics of karst form in total - make a perfect contrast to the coast.

Lots of cairns from Bronze and Early Iron Age testify that Gradac area was inhabitated in prehistoric. In ancient times, Roman Civitas Biston was in Gradac teritory, which belonged to Narona colony as coastal center.

Rim fragment of a monumental building from II.-III. century has been found on the Gradina locality, as well as specimens of Roman money.

A number of graves have been found by the Laguna hotel so it's considered that there was Roman necropolis. Middleage town, Lapčan or Labinac, which was mentioned by Bisantine emperor Porfroge in X. century, was located at the present site. Gradac was first called by this name in 1649, according to fortress on the hill upon todays church of St. Michael, which was built during Candian war (1645-1669).

According to the drawing by Venetian military engineer and cartographer Giuseppe Santini, that represents naval and land battle between the Venetians and Ottomans at Gradac in 1666, the fortress is shown in flame.

Sunset

At sunset, when first stars appear, the sun and the sea make a beautiful postcard. Big red sun plunges into the sea illuminating the light clouds by it's rays. The embrace of the sea, sunset and the sky, every other night coloured with different shades of bright colours, makes an unbelievably warm atmosphere that makes you want to travel to our southern regions at the very moment.

Gradac - Old villages

There are still remains of old tower from 16th century at abandoned hamlet Čista above Gradac, center of former Fragostine's headquarders called nahiya (Osman empire's form of today's municipity). There are still remains of abandoned houses that have tipical construction features of this area.

One of the oldest existing buildings in Gradac is the St.Paškal chapel on the Plana hill. Local cemetery is located by the old parish church of St.Anthony. New church, St.Michael's, was built in 1852 at the center, in the part called Gradina. There are three marmor altars with statues in the church and the most interesting one is an old wooden statue of St.Roko. New church has an old stone font, originally from old church.
